The Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a rare historical treasure. Preserved under a protective red sandstone overhang, authentic Anasazi cliff dwellings, built more than 700 years ago, await you here. There are no "Do Not Touch" signs. You are free to touch and even go inside these fascinating architectural remnants of an American Indian culture that roamed the Four Corners area of the Southwest from 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1300. Next to the cliff dwellings is a three-story Pueblo-style building that houses the Anasazi museum and a Southwestern gift shop. This structure was faithfully designed and constructed in the architectural style of the Pueblo Indians, descendants of the Anasazi. Our outdoor archaeological and natural history preserve includes reproductions of a stone mesa-top building and an Anasazi baking oven. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway is privately owned and runs 8.9 miles up the mountain. The round trip lasts 3 hours and 10 minutes. The first third of the trip is along Ruxton Creek in Englemann Canyon. The steep track follows a cascading stream through dense stands of Englemann spruce, Colorado blue spruce as well as Ponderosa pine trees. The track is built next to the stream and there are boulder fields on both sides of the train The middle third of the trip reflects a gentler grade. Right below the old settlement of Ruxton Park the train passes through what is known as "Hells Gate," a natural gateway in the mountains.
